Our History

Great food from great sources
From the early 19th century

The Story: humble beginnings

A coachman was originally a driver of a horse-drawn carriage, a profession that became especially prominent in the 18th and 19th centuries. The role of the coachman required both skill and expertise in handling horses and navigating carriages across various terrains. In the Midwest, coachmen were initially employed by families, businesses, and hotels, where they transported goods and people through towns and countryside alike. During this period, coachmen were primarily associated with practicality and necessity, performing their duties in simple, often rural environments. Their role was essential, but not glamorous, often involving long hours in harsh conditions.

As urbanization spread and industrialization took hold, the position of the coachman began to evolve, especially in wealthier households. By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, coachmen working for the elite had their roles elevated, taking on the prestige and manner of a trusted servant, much like a butler. These luxury coachmen were responsible not only for driving but also for maintaining their employer's horses and carriages, often dressed in tailored uniforms that symbolized their status in upscale society. As carriages became symbols of wealth and luxury, coachmen themselves came to be seen as part of the opulent lifestyle, reflecting the increasing refinement of the households they served.

Mixing tradition with fresh influences and a tuscan atmosphere

Today, The Coachman draws inspiration from this timeless tradition, blending heritage with modern elegance. Much like the coachmen of old, this brand exudes refinement and meticulous craftsmanship, bringing a sense of elevated luxury into everyday life.
